In many ways, DeFi has come to feel like it’s trapped in an eternal “bro-grammer” echo chamber. I’m happy to report that that’s all about to change. And Avalanche, surprisingly, is leading the charge.
DeFi's Glass Ceiling is Cracking
Let's be honest, the crypto space, especially DeFi, hasn't exactly been welcoming to women. It's often intimidating, filled with jargon, and frankly, can feel like a boys' club. The future of finance cannot truly be built without full participation from half the population. Like any good idea, it requires an infusion of new perspectives to realize its full potential.
Think about it. As the male-centric traditional finance world for centuries has proven, sometimes men are responsible for some pretty monumental megafails. As we have seen, groupthink and unchecked biases have resulted in major catastrophes. These issues affect women and marginalized communities especially, pointing to an overall ignorance of their various needs. We cannot afford to make the same mistakes as the traditional markets with DeFi.
Avalanche was built for that future—one where speed, low fees, and customizability are essential. This building block is quietly helping to power a more inclusive DeFi ecosystem. It’s more than just putting a “women in crypto” sticker on a project. It’s about fundamentally changing the infrastructure to remove barriers to entry and ensure there is true participation.
- Lower Fees: Avalanche's low transaction fees are a game-changer. High gas fees on other chains effectively price out smaller investors, often women who may have less disposable income to gamble with.
- Faster Transactions: Quick settlement times mean less opportunity for front-running and other predatory practices that can discourage newcomers.
- Subnets: The ability to create custom subnets allows for the development of DeFi applications specifically tailored to the needs of underserved communities. Imagine a subnet focused on micro-loans for female entrepreneurs in developing countries. That's the power of Avalanche.
From Sabah to DeFi Accessibility
My roots are in Sabah, Malaysia. I have seen, especially among the underbanked and unbanked, how lack of access to these services halts economic growth and fosters inequality. Done right, DeFi can help create a more level playing field and greater agency for individuals in places such as Sabah. Unfortunately, that “bro-grammer” culture isn’t just the entryway, it’s what needs to be torn down and rebuilt.
Accessibility isn't just about technology. It's about education, community, and representation. This meant curating an environment where women and people of underrepresented backgrounds feel free to learn, experiment, and build.
I've been digging deep into the Avalanche ecosystem, and I'm starting to see projects that get it. These are the projects that are truly on the frontlines, endeavoring to create new bridges and remove old barriers.
I'm not going to name names just yet, but I'm seeing:
- Educational initiatives that are providing free, accessible resources for learning about DeFi.
- Community-led programs that are fostering supportive environments for women and minorities.
- Projects with diverse leadership teams that are actively working to create a more inclusive culture.
All of these projects are helping build the underlying infrastructure and advancing the future of DeFi on Avalanche. What they’re doing is truly changing the landscape in these communities.
You Hold the Key to Change
This isn't just about altruism. It's about smart investing. We know that diverse teams are more innovative, more resilient, and ultimately, more profitable. These projects that create a sense of community and prioritize inclusivity are not only the right investment, they’re the smartest investment.
Avalanche's DeFi TVL might be smaller than Ethereum's right now ($1.29 billion versus $50+ billion), but that's precisely the opportunity. We’re just on the ground floor of this effort to build a more equitable and accessible financial system.
DeFi isn't just about making money. It's about building a better future. And that future needs to be female, accessible and inclusive. And Avalanche has every shot at becoming that one platform to turn that vision into reality. It’s all up to us to ensure it happens.
- Do Your Research: Look beyond the hype and identify projects within the Avalanche ecosystem that are genuinely committed to inclusivity.
- Support Diverse Teams: Invest in projects with women and minorities in leadership positions.
- Get Involved: Join communities, attend events, and amplify the voices of underrepresented groups.
- Challenge the Status Quo: Call out sexism and exclusion whenever you see it.
Together, let’s forge a DeFi ecosystem that is as fair and equitable as it is groundbreaking. A DeFi ecosystem that’s inclusive and representative of the world we all live in. Because together, reclaiming the future of finance starts with you.
Let's build a DeFi ecosystem that's not just innovative, but also just. A DeFi ecosystem that reflects the diversity of the world we live in. Because the future of finance belongs to all of us.
